On this day Mika Hakkinen won Japanese GP and confirmed him as 1998 Drivers’ Champion as title-rival Michael Schumacher retired with a punctured tyre on Lap 31. Mika Häkkinen (pictured in 2006) won his first title with McLaren. Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher (pictured in 2005) finished as runner-up, 14 points behind Häkkinen. Häkkinen’s teammate, David Coulthard (pictured in 1999), finished the season ranked third.
