Did F1 ban Marlboro?
F1 officially bans tobacco advertising. This decision is heavily influenced by increasing legislative pressure from the European Union, which had set a deadline on the presence of cigarettes in sports. By the 1990’s the anti-tobacco movement was more organized and many attempts on many levels were made to ban tobacco advertising in Formula 1 and its global broadcasts. By the end of the 2006 season, tobacco advertising was effectively banned and disappeared from F1.
Why did Ferrari remove Marlboro?
There are countries where tobacco sponsorship is obviously not allowed. In those countries we will continue to support Ferrari without branding. In due course, the word Marlboro was dropped from the team name, and the logo replaced with a barcode design (figure 2).
