The legendary three-time formula 1 champion niki lauda died on tuesday at the age of 71. The austrian spent the last moments of his life with his beloved wife, birgit wetzinger. Although he never liked to reveal details about his private life in public, he once revealed to reporters how she had saved his life in 2005. In an interview with austrian times on the occasion of his 60th birthday, niki lauda stated that a journalist asking him how his injured face affected his marriage was the biggest insult he had to suffer in his life.

Drivers Arturo Merzario, Lunger, Guy Edwards, and Harald Ertl arrived at the scene a few moments later. Merzario was able to pull him from his car after releasing the belt. By the time he was released; Lauda had suffered severe burns to his head, face and hands. Fellow driver Guy Edwards managed to avoid the blazing wreckage but Harald Ertl and Brett Lunger both hit it. All three drivers raced to the burning Ferrari and, with the help of the Italian driver Arturo Merzario, who also stopped, eventually managed to pull 27-year-old Lauda from his vehicle.
